A high pressure system across the Mediterranean Sea is heading towards the east over the next few days, bringing an intense temperature rise especially over southern Italy and the Balkans. At the same time low pressure systems across the western and northern Europe are bringing an intense temperature drop and heavy showers or thunderstorms outbreaks especially over Iberia, France, Germany, northern Italy and Scandinavia.

An extratropical cyclone named Danielle, ex-hurricane Category 1, is approaching Iberia during the next few hours, bringing heavy showers and thunderstorms which could cause flash flooding especially in western areas of Portugal and Spain with accumulations reaching 110-130mm (during the next 3 days). After the intense heat over Spain and France a temperature drop is expected. Today, Monday 12/09, maximum temperatures reached 35-37°C over a few parts of eastern Spain and southern France, while during the next few days temperatures will drop even 10°C with maximum temperature reaching  22°C on Tuesday in Madrid and 17°C on Friday in Paris.

At the same time, a low pressure system across Scandinavia is heading towards the east, spreading showers which will be locally intense, mostly over Norway. First cold spells will take place over the next few days with maximum temperatures reaching 13-15°C.

As the low pressure systems are heading eastwards heavy thunderstorms and showers will spread during the next few days across central Europe and Italy accompanied by strong wind gusts and large hail. The temperature drop will be more intense from Friday until Monday with maximum temperatures not exceeding 13-15°C over much of central Europe.

On the other hand, as the high pressure system is heading eastwards over the next few days a temperature rise is expected with maximum temperatures reaching 34-36°C across southern Italy and the southern Balkans.
