Il super tifone Mawar, equivalente alla categoria 4 degli uragani atlantici, si trova a due passi da Guam, nell'Oceano Pacifico, con il suo occhio in prossimità delle coste settentrionali. L'aeroporto internazionale di Guam ha registrato venti a 170km/h mercoledì sera, ma poco al largo si stima che le raffiche abbiano raggiunto i 240km/h. Praticamente tutta l'isola è rimasta senza corrente elettrica, graziando soltanto un migliaio di utenze sulle 52000 totali. Intanto proseguono piogge torrenziali che potranno portare gli accumuli pluviometrici fino a 500mm entro domani su alcune zone dell'isola, con conseguenti frane ed esondazioni.

Si tratta di uno dei più potenti tifoni che abbiano mai coinvolto Guam, dopo Karen nel 1962, di categoria 5. Le autorità locali hanno avvertito i residenti in abitazioni in legno o lamiera di evacuare e rifugiarsi negli appositi centri allestiti per la situazione di emergenza, esortando inoltre tutti i residenti a rimanere lontano dalle coste per il rischio di violentissime mareggiate con onde alte anche dieci metri.

Da domani Mawar abbandonerà definitivamente Guam, spostandosi verso ovest alla velocità di circa 10km/h. Sabato potrebbe ulteriormente intensificarsi e raggiungere l'equivalente della categoria 5 degli uragani atlantici, anche se in quel momento si troverà a in azione in pieno Oceano senza coinvolgere la terraferma. Dall'inizio della prossima settimana potrebbe però avvicinarsi pericolosamente al nord delle Filippine e soprattutto a Taiwan.
JUST IN: The center of Typhoon #Mawar has just passed between Guam and Rota and is slowly heading to the Philippine Sea.
As of 8 PM, it was able to maintain its intensity at 175 km/h near the center, but JMA forecasts it to continue intensifying in the coming days.
