A tragedy took place last weekend (18-19/02) during the carnival event in Brazil with the most severe weather taking place across the Brazilian coast. A deadly storm caused severe flooding and claimed at least 40 lives in the state of São Paolo, while hundreds of people were injured. Many buildings collapsed and washed away and a red warning was issued for the state, while carnival events were canceled across parts of the coastline.
The torrential rain along with the strong winds caused severe flooding across the coastern areas resulting in a double amount of the month rain for a few areas. The accumulation rate within 24 hours was: 683mm in Bertioga, 627mm in São Sebastião, 395mm in Guarujá, 335mm in Ubatuba, 232mm in Santos, 209mm in Praia Grande. Firefighters, helicopters and soldiers were helping people affected by the downpour. As it seems from the videos and photos entire neighborhoods are under water, houses and cars swept away while roads are destroyed by the flooding and the falling trees. Hundreds of people were homeless, while rain continued dropping.
State Governor Tarcísio de Freitas declared a state of emergency, while he freed up the equivalent of $1.5m in funding to aid in disaster relief.
Extreme weather events are continuing to persist in Brazil, while it was only last year in the city of Petropolis where another storm brought a death toll of more than 230 people.
