STORM BARRA IN THE BRITISH ISLES: HURRICANE FORCE WINDS, HEAVY RAIN AND SNOW
Storm Barra is a very deep low pressure system which is hitting the UK today as it continues its path from the Atlantic, affecting the country until Thursday morning. The storm's pressure was at 960hPa today over Ireland, while in southeastern regions of England was 1000hPa. The 40hPa pressure difference between such a close distance created winds of 110 km/h and gust winds of 135 km/h in Sherkin Island, southern Ireland, while the significant wave height was recorded at 11.3 meters in the Celtic Sea. Already have issued 11 flood warnings and 54 flood alerts for England today and UK trains and flights have been cancelled. Furthermore, approximately 50.000 houses remain without power as Storm Barra made landfall.

STRONG WINDS AND BLIZZARDS. Tonight Storm Barra will be centered between Ireland and Britain and will continue spreading gales of 110-120 km/h, as well as, snow and blizzards on hills of northern England and Scotland. In France and the Low Countries a band of cloud and rain is heading eastwards across the countries turning heavy over the coastal regions, leaving a few dry spells west of France. In the Bay of Biscay strong wind gusts of 85-95 km/h are expected.
Tomorrow 8/12 as Storm Barra will be centered over northeastern Britain will continue spreading scattered showers across the British Isles, turning to snow over 600m. Wind gusts are predicted to reach locally 100-110 km/h as it crosses east throughout the day, while the wave height will be at 7-8m between Ireland and the Bay of Biscay with a gradual easing.An increase in the pressure is expected as the Storm moves to the east reaching 975 hPa tomorrow at 12 UTC according to the latest forecasting data. The deep low pressure system will continue bringing scattered showers over France and the Low Countries, but these will ease bringing dry and sunny spells.
