A potential Tropical Cyclone is centered today near the coast of Venezuela and is heading northwestwards towards the southern Caribbean Sea bringing  severe thunderstorms, strong wind gusts, flash floods and possible destruction locally. The potential Tropical Cyclone will intensify next hours and will be upgraded to a Tropical Cyclone, named Bonnie. The most severe weather will take place on Friday and Saturday across Nicaragua and Costa Rica when the Tropical Storm will be more intense.

The Tropical Storm has already brought heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong wind s across eastern Venezuela and next hours will continue producing locally intense rain in the northeastern parts of the city. Tropical Storm Bonnie is the 2nd Tropical Storm in the Atlantic Ocean for 2022, as well as for June. There has never been a tropical system during La Niña conditions, as we are experiencing now, the last 150 years during June across the coasts of South America. This is because when we experience La Niña conditions, the waters in the Pacific Ocean are more cold and they knock down wind shear in the Atlantic basin which is necessary in order to create a Tropical System.

Tomorrow, Tropical Storm Bonnie will intensify and will head towards the southern Caribbean Sea, bringing thunderstorms to the southern island of the Sea and to the northwestern parts of Venezuela and the northern odf Colombia. The thunderstorms will be accompanied by strong wind gusts of 80-90 km/h creating coastal floods. Sea waves could reach 3.5-4 m.

On Friday Bonnie will be centered in southeastern Nicaragua and will intensify as it will already have met the warm waters of the Caribbean Sea. Wind gusts could reach 110 km/h bringing coastal floods in the eastern coasts of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Severe thunderstorms and heavy rain is expected during the day.

On Saturday as it will make a landfall over Nicaragua and it ll cross it the system will lose some of its power, but it could still create flash floods. On Sunday it ll be pass to the Pacific Ocean and will head northwestwards.

During the next 5 days rain accumulations could reach locally 150-200 mm in the southeastern parts of Nicaragua and the northern parts of Costa Rica due to the course of Bonnie.
