Dal 26 febbraio uno dei più grandi incendi degli USA, quello di Smokehouse Creek, ha bruciato già circa 500000 ettari di terreno in Texas e risulta uno dei più grandi della storia del continente americano, anche se ora il 75% dei focolai è ormai contenuto. A scatenarlo è stato un incidente avvenuto alla Xcel Energy, una società di servizi elettrici e di fornitura di gas naturale degli Stati Uniti, causato dal crollo di un traliccio per le forti raffiche di vento a Stinnett, cittadina nel nord del Texas.

L'incendio si è poi propagato rapidamente verso ovest fin verso il confine con l'Oklahoma, provocando la morte di migliaia di animali tra cui mucche, vitelli, manzi e tori e anche di due persone, con ingenti danni ad infrastruttura, case e automobili. Si teme per gli animali sopravvissuti, poiché la maggior parte dell'erba per loro commestibile è andata bruciata.
