Il settore orientale del Golfo di Carpentaria, nel Queensland, sta sperimentando da alcuni giorni condizioni fortemente perturbate, responsabili di pesanti inondazioni. A farne le spese è soprattutto la zona di Burketown, posta lungo il corso del fiume Albert, dove l'acqua è cresciuta a livelli record. La sua portata sabato ha superato i sette metri, battendo il precedente record di 6,78 metri del 2011. Non lontano altri fiumi sono in piena o esondati, tra questi il Leichhardt, il Nicholson, il Gregory e il Flinders, tutti che sfociano verso nord nel Golfo di Carpentaria.

Burketown è completamente allagata e le acque alluvionali, oltre ad aver compromesso il sistema fognario, hanno indotto i coccodrilli a nuotare tra i centri abitati. Le autorità locali hanno già avvistato diversi rettili in molte zone della comunità e avvertito i residenti del serio pericolo, consigliando di evitare il più possibile di trovarsi sulle aree allagate. Anche il bestiame è in pericolo e molti animali, tra cui canguri, sono trasportati in elicottero in posti più elevati, per sfuggire al rischio di attacchi. A mettere a repentaglio la sicurezza sono anche gli squali toro, che di solito abitano gli estuari dei fiumi.
