The subtropical storm Yakecan hit Uruguay and Brazil on Tuesday and Wednesday with packed winds over 100 km/h, bringing floods, temperature drop, the first snow of the year, power outages and two people lost their lives. Yakecan meaning is "heaven's sound" in the Guaraní language.

Yakecan caused destruction: Cyclone Yakecan was classified as a subtropical storm by Brazil's Navy, the tropical authority in that portion of the basin. The strong wind gusts of the storm killed a 3-year-old man when a tree fell on his house in the capital of Uruguay, Montevideo, while In Rio Grande Do Sul, a 51-year-old man drowned  when his boat capsized. When Yakecan hit the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, in Brazil, left about 182.000 houses without electricity. Because of the strong wind many roofs were blown away, thousands of trees fell and really impressive was the big amount of sea foam that invaded the coastal areas. Three days after the Yakecan 15.000 houses are still without electricity.

Temperatures below normal for the season and snow: borned in the low latitudes, Yakecan was accompanied by cold currents that have caused temperature fall below normal for this period of the year. In more detail, on Tuesday the temperature reached 14°C in Porto Alegre while the average temperature of the season is 21-22°C, 13°C in Montevideo, in Uruguay and 14°C in Buenos Aires, in Argentina. The storm was affecting Brazil until early Thursday. Yakecan brought also the first snowshowers of the year, on Tuesday morning, in São Joaquim, in Brazil.

Last but not least, subtropical storms are not rare for these countries, as last year 4 subtropical storms were formed and affected the regions with floods and strong winds, but also they do not happen on a regular basis.
