Storm Debi is a strong Atlantic low pressure system with pressure close to 970 hPa, that is influencing today the UK with strong winds, high waves and heavy rainfall, causing flash floods and destructions. This is the busiest storm season for the UK and in particular this is the first winter since 2015 that a storm has been named with D.


Wind gusts over 120 km/h and waves over 5-6m: the storm passed through the Ireland and moved northeastwards towards England and Scotland today, bringing strong winds with gusts reaching 124km/h in Gwynedd, 119km/h in Killowen, Northern Ireland, 110km/h on the Isle of Man, in the Irish Sea. Now, Storm Debi is located east of Edinburgh and is heading east towards the North Sea and Scandinavia, bringing strong wind gusts tonight especially to the northern Netherlands and Denmark. The wave height is reaching 5-6m across the Celtic Sea, the North Sea and tomorrow in the northwestern coasts of France.


Flash floods and destruction:

today, strong wind gusts caused power cuts across the island of Ireland, with around

100.000 homes and businesses left without electricity.

In Scotland, rail passengers faced disruption with speed restrictions introduced while some services have been halted due to flooding. Due to the wind there were several disruptions in rail, sea and air connections, Network Rail Scotland had to significantly reduce the speed of convoys. A postal worker in County Limerick, Ireland, was struck by windblown objects and was hospitalized with her injuries. Many trees were uprooted by the force of the wind, including around London. There are also delays and some canceled flights in Ireland, Scotland and England.
